Description
Moss Verbena, Verbena tenuisecta
This species is a sprawling 6-12 ” tall, perennial that will spread 3-6′. The lovely fern-like evergreen foliage is topped with clusters of tiny blooms in shades of purple. These flowers are highly attractive to butterflies.
Moss Verbena is evergreen in zones 8-10 and is a self-sowing annual in colder regions. This introduced wildflower from South America is hardy in temperatures above 90°F to the lower teens. It has naturalized along the southern coastal plains and is very well adapted to drought conditions.
Prefers well-draining sandy soils in full sun. Use as a colorful, long-blooming groundcover or as a sweet treat in containers. Good for slopes, banks, pollinator gardens, rock gardens, or along walkways.
