Mountain Beebalm

Mountain Beebalm, also known as Wild Bergamot, is a fragrant North American native perennial prized for its showy lavender-pink flower clusters and exceptional value to pollinators. Blooming from midsummer into early fall, its nectar-rich tubular flowers attract bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and other beneficial insects, while also serving as a host plant for several butterfly and moth species. The aromatic foliage has long been valued for making herbal teas and has a history of traditional medicinal use.

This adaptable, clump-forming wildflower thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soils, though it tolerates clay, rocky soils, and periods of drought once established. Growing 18–30 inches tall, Mountain Beebalm is an excellent choice for native gardens, prairie plantings, pollinator habitats, and naturalized landscapes. Plants spread slowly by rhizomes and may take a full season to become established, often reaching their best bloom beginning in the second year. Deadheading encourages a longer bloom period, while dividing mature clumps every few years helps maintain vigor and improve air circulation.

Best Planting Season:

Most wildflowers are best planted from late fall through early spring, allowing seeds to germinate in their natural seasonal cycle.

Easy Planting Instructions:

  1. Prepare the soil: Remove weeds and grasses, then loosen the top layer of soil for better seed-to-soil contact.
  2. Spread the seeds evenly: Scatter the seeds over the entire area. Aim for even coverage and 3-6 inches of space between seeds.
  3. Cover lightly: Rake gently to settle the seed into the soil. Cover with approximately a 1/8 inch of soil, then press the soil down with your hands or a wide board. Use only a thin layer of mulch to hold moisture.
  4. Water regularly: Gently soak the area and maintain consistent moisture from seeding through early growth. If irrigation is not practical, aim to plant when natural moisture is most reliable.
  5. Maintenance: Early seedlings can look like weeds. Wait until plants are recognizable or blooms appear before pulling weeds.
