Butterflies and hummingbirds love the brilliant nectar-rich flowers of this perennial species that is native to Eastern North America and found in ope.  The upright stalks of Red Lobelia or “cardinal flower” (1-2′) are covered in brilliant red blooms in late summer. The lower portion of the tall spikes is covered with dark green foliage.  For cold stratification, place this seed along with a small amount of peat moss and a couple of drops of water in a plastic bag and place in the refrigerator for 10 days, then press onto the surface of fine soil and keep moist until germination.  This plant is often found in open, moist areas, such as stream banks, marshes, and low woodlands.
