Description
White Upland Aster (Oligoneuron album), also known as Upland White Goldenrod, is a graceful native perennial that brings a cloud of delicate white blooms to the late-season garden. Unlike the bright yellow flowers typical of goldenrods, this unique species produces hundreds of tiny, star-shaped white flowers arranged in airy, branching clusters that seem to float above the foliage from late summer through fall. The elegant display brightens meadows and naturalized landscapes while providing a vital nectar source when many other wildflowers have finished blooming.
Native to prairies, open woodlands, glades, and dry upland habitats throughout much of the central and eastern United States, White Upland Aster thrives in full sun and well-drained soils. It performs exceptionally well in sandy, gravelly, rocky, or lean soils and is highly tolerant of drought once established. Growing 2 to 4 feet tall, this hardy perennial develops attractive, narrow foliage and a naturally upright habit that blends beautifully with native grasses and other prairie wildflowers.
A favorite of native bees, honeybees, butterflies, skippers, moths, and numerous other pollinators, White Upland Aster provides critical late-season nectar and pollen resources. Songbirds may also feed on its seeds during fall and winter. Its adaptability and ecological value make it an excellent choice for pollinator gardens, prairie restorations, native plant landscapes, xeriscapes, roadsides, and wildflower meadows. Deer-resistant and low maintenance, this distinctive native wildflower offers season-long interest, supports wildlife, and creates a soft, naturalistic effect that shines in both formal and informal plantings.
